Nunez Returns to Sigur Center for 30th Commencement Ceremony

Nunez Community College returned to the Sigur Civic Center in Chalmette on May 19 for the college’s 30th Commencement Ceremony.

Nunez last held its Spring graduation ceremony at the Sigur Center in 2019. The coronavirus pandemic canceled plans for 2020’s graduation, leading to a dual ceremony last year in the Nunez Auditorium for both the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021.

Last year’s ceremony was forced to limit guest attendance due to social distancing guidelines. But the return to the Sigur Center brought a return to unlimited guests, which led in turn to much louder cheers throughout the 30th Commencement Ceremony.

The special guest commencement speaker was AJ Walker, Senior Public Affairs and Development Manager for Venture Global LNG.

The ceremony also featured the awarding of Nunez’s Excellence In Teaching Award, which includes the Lamarque Endowed Professorship, to Nick Slie, Professor of Theater and Video Production at Nunez. Slie was announced as the winner by 2021 Excellence In Teaching Award Winner and Nunez Electrical Instructor Steve Baiamonte.

Nominees for the Excellence In Teaching Award also included Klaus Heyer, Professor of Biology, and Keith Province, Instructor of Welding.

Among the graduates participating in the May 19 ceremonies were the first graduates from Nunez’s new Coastal Studies and GIS Technology program, a collaboration with St. Bernard Parish Government. Those historic students included Lori Crowson of Meraux, Max Haines of Arabi, Megan Thorne Sfamurri of Arabi, Jordan Verret of Slidell and Paul McIntyre of New Orleans.

Two graduates completed their degrees with a perfect 4.0 GPA: Raymond Parker of Slidell and Anthony Powers of Saint Bernard.

31 high school seniors from Belle Chasse High School, Chalmette High School and Salmen High School who participated in Dual Enrollment classes through Nunez graduated with a credential from Nunez in the same month they graduated high school.

Four graduates from Chalmette High School earned their full associate degrees in Nunez’s Aerospace Manufacturing Technology program. Those dual graduates include Logan Blankenship, Axel Lazo, Chance Smith and Haley Strassel.

Registration is open now at Nunez.edu for the Summer 2022 semester and Summer Mini Session A, with classes scheduled to begin on June 1. Registration is also open for the Fall 2022 semester, with classes scheduled to begin Aug. 15. View available courses for all terms at Nunez.edu/schedule.
