Nunez Community College has seen a 12 percent increase in enrollment during the Fall 2022 semester thanks to innovative programs like dual enrollment and cross enrollment. Pictured, dual enrolled students from local high schools attend an Intro to Construction class on the Nunez campus.

Nunez Community College in Chalmette has leveraged several innovative programs to post a 12 percent student headcount increase for the Fall 2022 semester.

As traditional student enrollment lags at community colleges across the country in the wake of the pandemic, Nunez has expanded its focus on dual enrolled and cross enrolled students. Dual enrolled students (high school students taking college courses) jumped by 31 percent. Cross enrolled students (students enrolled at a partner university while taking courses through Nunez) increased by more than 200 percent.

Nunez has Dual Enrollment agreements in place to serve students from 15 area high schools. These students participate in full-credit college courses with the option to earn a certificate or associate degree before graduating from high school. Most college credits earned at Nunez are also transferable to other colleges and universities.

Nunez’s cross enrolled students are enrolled in the Link To Success program at the University of New Orleans. This novel program allows students who do not currently meet UNO’s academic standards to remain enrolled at UNO while taking remedial courses through Nunez on the UNO campus.

UNO President Dr. John Nicklow was recently presented with Nunez’s Spirit of Nunez - Chancellor’s Vision Award for his leadership in the Link To Success program.

Nunez Vice Chancellor for Education, Training and Student Success Dr. Cherie Kay LaRocca said that Nunez’s expanded focus on dual enrollment and cross enrollment weren’t directly tied to the nationwide dip in traditional enrollment, but rather they reflect Nunez’s constant efforts to offer high-quality, affordable instruction to all eligible students and populations.

"Our partnerships with local high schools and the University of New Orleans allow us to meet students where they are and help them succeed,” said Dr. LaRocca. “Whether students are working or enrolled at another institution, we allow them to earn college credits when they can. That can take the form of night classes, an eight-week mini-session, a winter intersession, or taking college courses alongside high school courses.”
