Nunez Culinary student ShawnDra Young accepts the 1st Place – Savory award from guest judge and celebrity chef Kevin Belton and Nunez Culinary Professor Chef Ruth Varisco during Nunez’s 2022 King Cake Extravaganza. The public is invited both to attend and compete in Nunez’s 2023 King Cake Extravaganza on Feb. 16.

Nunez Community College in Chalmette is inviting the public to be a part of a tradition as old as the college, inviting the community to both attend and compete in the 2023 King Cake Extravaganza.

Nunez is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary year. Since the college’s founding in 1992, the King Cake Extravaganza has taken place almost every year, excluding interruptions for Hurricane Katrina and the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a successful return in 2022, the Culinary Arts and Entrepreneurship program is calling all King Cake fans to be a part of the longstanding tradition.

“The competition is open to the general public,” said Culinary Professor Chef Ruth Varisco. “Everyone is invited to be a part of this distinguished experience relative to the King Cake phenomenon.”

Members of the community are invited to the Fine Arts Building on the Nunez campus Feb. 16 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to purchase a slice of King Cake baked by Nunez students and other contestants and cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award. The competition will feature both savory and sweet King Cakes, with slices going for just $2 apiece.

Bakers wishing to compete alongside Nunez students in the King Cake Extravaganza are asked to contact Culinary Assistant Professor Chef Anastasia Joyner at 504-278-6265 or ajoyner@nunez.edu.

More than 60 Mini-Session B courses, including Culinary courses like Food Service Management, are available at Nunez.edu.

Students registering for Mini-Session B courses at Nunez will also receive all of their course texts and required supplies for free thanks to the Follett Access program, which runs through the end of the Spring 2023 semester.
