The Heavy Equipment program from Nunez Community College’s Workforce Division graduated its second cohort of completers March 31 on the Nunez campus.
Six students received the following 14 industry certifications upon completing the eight-week course:
- NCCER – Core Construction Skills
- NCCER – Heavy Equipment Level 1
- OSHA 10 – Construction
- MSHA – New Miner
- American Heart Association – CPR/First Aid/AED
- Aerial Manlift – Scissor Lift
- Basic Rigging
- 8-Hour Confined Space Entry
- Fall Protection
- Field Safety Orientation Training
- Forklift Operation – Straight Mast and Extended (2)
- HAZWOPER
- Incipient Firefighting – Fire Safety (2)
- Trenching & Excavation
The graduates included:

- Derrick Echols of St. Bernard Parish
- Keny Fuentes of Jefferson Parish
- Jason Johnson of St. Tammany Parish
- Celeste Mays of St. Bernard Parish
- Haydon Strother of Livingston Parish
Jennifer Haas, a recruitment specialist for Complete Logistical Services in Arabi, spoke to the grads before and during the graduation ceremony, describing their tremendous employment prospects thanks to their newly-earned certifications. She told the group that the local construction industry is hungry for qualified employees, and that new employees are routinely hired for $23 per hour or more.
