Nunez Celebrates 31st Commencement Ceremony

Nunez Community College celebrated 591 graduating students May 19 at the Sigur Civic Center in Chalmette during the college’s 31st Commencement Ceremony.

St. Bernard native and 25-year educator Dr. Henderson Lewis served as commencement speaker. Dr. Lewis is currently Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership within the School of Education, College of Human Sciences and Education at Louisiana State University. He previously served as superintendent of New Orleans Public Schools and East Feliciana Parish Schools. He began his career as a math teacher in St. Bernard Parish and later served 11 years as a member of the St. Bernard Parish Public Schools Board.

The ceremony also featured the awarding of Nunez’s Excellence In Teaching Award, which includes the Lamarque Endowed Professorship, to Dr. Alaa Khalil, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Nunez. The Excellence In Teaching Award is voted on each year by Nunez instructors to honor one of their own.

Dr. Khalil was announced as the winner by 2022 Excellence In Teaching Award Winner and Nunez Louisiana Transfer Degree Program Chair Nick Slie. Nominees for the Excellence In Teaching Award also included Chef Anastasia Joyner, Assistant Professor of Culinary Arts and Nunez’s Faculty Senate President, and Charles Miller, Instructor of Sociology.

Four graduates completed their degrees with a perfect 4.0 GPA: Joseph Landix of Violet, Ethan Melerine of Chalmette, Michelet Merelan of Gretna and Steven Mulvaney of Metairie.

137 high school seniors from Belle Chasse High School, Chalmette High School, Frederick Douglas High School, First Baptist High School, John F. Kennedy High School, New Orleans Career Center, Pearl River High School, Phoenix High School and Salmen High School who participated in Dual Enrollment classes through Nunez graduated with a credential from Nunez in the same month they graduated high school.
 
Four graduates from Chalmette High School earned their full associate degrees. Those dual graduates include Ethan Delaune (Associate in Aerospace), Alana Holmes (Associate in Process Technology), Shelby Schneider (Associate in Aerospace) and Dah’Janah Smith (Associate in Aerospace).

Electrical Construction graduate Jorge Arauz of Arabi graduated alongside his mother, Marcela Estrada, who earned her Instrumentation Helper certificate.
