Nunez Recognizes 'Excellence in Teaching' with Award, Nominations

Excellence in Teaching Nominees

Nunez Community College instructors Charles Miller, Dr. Alaa Khalil and Anastasia Joyner were nominated by their peers for Nunez’s 2023 Excellence In Teaching Award. Dr. Khalil was announced as the winner during Nunez’s 31st Commencement Ceremony May 18 at the Sigur Center in Chalmette.

The faculty at Nunez Community College honored three of the college’s top instructors earlier this year with nominations for the annual Excellence In Teaching Award, which was presented to the winner, Dr. Alaa Khalil, during Nunez’s 31st Commencement Ceremony May 18 at the Sigur Center in Chalmette.

Dr. Khalil, assistant professor of Biological Sciences, was nominated along with Chef Anastasia Joyner, assistant professor in the Culinary Arts program, and Charles Miller, assistant professor of Sociology. All three nominees were recognized April 13 during Nunez’s Excellence In Teaching Luncheon.

The three nominees and eventual winner were selected by their fellow faculty members earlier in the academic year through several rounds of voting. The winner of the Excellence In Teaching Award also receives the Lamarque Endowed Professorship.

Dr. Khalil was announced as the 2023 winner during commencement by 2022's Excellence In Teaching winner, Nick Slie, Program Chair for the Louisiana Transfer Degree program and assistant professor of theater and video production.

“Thank you so much for this opportunity,” Dr. Khalil said, sharing some brief comments from the Sigur Center stage. “Thank you to my faculty, to my administration and my lovely students. Thank you so much.”

At the Excellence In Teaching Luncheon in April, Joyner, Dr. Khalil and Miller were each introduced by a fellow instructor, followed by a meal catered by Nunez’s Culinary Arts students.

All the nominees summarized their philosophies on teaching and the motivations that drove them to excellence.

“I strive to push every day for improvement without losing sight of compassion. I love the challenges of teaching and mentoring,” said Joyner. “To have the opportunity to positively affect the lives of others is my joy.”

“I aim each and every day to better myself not only as a person but as an educator as well,” said Dr. Khalil. “I always believe that every student has to have the opportunity to make a difference in their life and that is what we do at Nunez Community College.”

“I’ve been inquisitive about the world around me for as long as I can remember,” said Miller. “Never satisfied with the status quo, I questioned everything as a student, and I carry this intellectual curiosity with me as I am on the other side as the teacher.”

Nunez Chancellor Dr. Tina Tinney praised the three nominees as worthy of recognition “amongst a faculty that displays excellence from top to bottom.”

Registration is currently open for the Fall 2023 term at Nunez.edu. Classes begin Aug. 15.
