Cox Communications recently presented Nunez Community College with a $10,000 donation to fund Nunez’s Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) training program.
The dollars will be used for scholarships for 10 students in the CFOT course during the Fall 2023 semester. Interested students can apply for the scholarship through Aug. 25 at Nunez.edu/scholarships. Contact STEAM Director Julie Rexford at jrexford@nunez.edu to register for the CFOT course.
“We support education, and that includes training for the people who will ensure that we are connected today and for years to come,” says Anthony Pope, Cox’s Region Manager and Senior Vice President. “Our partnership with Nunez through scholarships and support provides a more efficient path from the classroom to the workforce.”
The introductory CFOT course combines theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare students to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association (FOA). The certification exam will be administered and graded at the end of class.
The course also introduces the student to industry standards governing Fiber To The Desk (FTTD), Fiber To The Home (FTTH), and Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation, and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards.
This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, along with basic testing and troubleshooting.
Students can register online at Nunez.edu. Students who require assistance are welcome to call 504-278-6467, email admissions@nunez.edu, or use the Live Chat feature at Nunez.edu.
