Nunez Community College hosted a completion ceremony for its Dual Enrollment Bridge Program and Summer Career Exploration June 27 on the Nunez campus.
The sister programs, which were offered for free thanks to Perkins Grant funding, are focused on equipping high school students with the soft skills to be successful in their next steps toward both higher education and careers. The Bridge Program emphasizes higher education for students who anticipate taking Dual Enrollment courses at Nunez during high school, while Summer Career Exploration emphasizes the variety of careers available locally.
Prior to the completion ceremony students participated in a mock career fair with representatives from organizations like Chalmette Refining and the St. Bernard Fire Department. Earlier in the month-long program students drafted resumes and participated in mock job interviews. They also took multiple trips off-campus with program mentors Maiya Tate and Dr. Jordan Sanchez to visit local industries and learn practical skills such as boating.
“You’re going to leave here a step ahead in life, moving toward your career in college, toward your goals and aspirations,” Dr. Sanchez told the students at the completion ceremony.
Students were given the opportunity to address their peers during the ceremony. Many thanked their mentors and spoke about the new friendships they formed during the programs. Several also reflected on memorable experiences and accomplishments.
“I didn’t think I was going to get through the electrical (lessons) and carpentry and all that. But I got through it and everybody was so supportive,” said Chance Course.
“It was really nice meeting all of you guys. I know we have our differences but, at the end of the day, we all came together and worked together really well,” said Alexander Penn.
“I learned how to do CPR, which I was not interested in at first. But it was still interesting,” said CJ Treadway.
Both the Bridge Program and Summer Career Exploration will be offered at Nunez during the summer of 2025. Registration is also open now for the Fall 2024 semester at Nunez.edu.
