Nunez Community College will host a pair of events in July to show both parents and educators the value of sensory learning.
The Care and Development of Young Children program at Nunez, which prepares students for careers in childcare or early childhood education, will partner with Stephanie Crowley of Crowley Academy to present Sensory Library Time for families on July 17 and a Sensory Activities in the Classroom workshop for educators on July 20.
Both events are free.
Sensory learning allows young children to deepen learning associations and recall by pairing stimuli from their five senses with learning materials.
“We might read a book that mentions different foods and allow kids to feel the texture of an apple or smell the scent of a lemon or to hear the sound of popcorn popping. They learn through their senses to understand better,” said Kathy Huff, Program Chair for the CDYC program. “We want to show educators how to use these methods in the classroom and we want parents to do them at home.”
Sensory Library Time will be offered on the second floor of the Nunez Library Wednesday, July 17, from 4-6 p.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their young children to participate in story time and other fun activities.
Families do not need to register to attend Sensory Library Time. Walk-ins are welcome.
The ‘Using Sensory Activities in the Classroom’ workshop for educators will take place Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building on the Nunez campus. Educators can sign up to participate by visiting Nunez.edu. For more details email Kathy Huff at khuff@nunez.edu.
Registration is also open for the Fall 2024 semester at Nunez.edu.
