The Student Testing & Career Counseling Center is Open on the Nunez Campus

STCCC Ribbon Cutting

Nunez Community College in Chalmette cut the ribbon on its new Student Testing & Career Counseling Center July 30. Nunez Chancellor Tina Tinney, Ed. D., presided over the ceremony, which welcomed guests including Dr. Monty Sullivan, President of Louisiana’s Community & Technical College System, Rita Gue, President of the Meraux Foundation, Nunez Foundation Chairman Clifford Englande and members of Nunez’s Foundation Board and architects from Holly & Smith Architects who designed the building.

The newest facility on Nunez Community College’s Chalmette campus is open following a ribbon cutting ceremony July 30 for the Student Testing & Career Counseling Center.

The STCCC houses Nunez’s dedicated Testing Center, along with large flex spaces which are available for community use, and the new Coffee House Nunez location and drive-through.

The project was a years-long collaboration between Nunez and its parent system, Louisiana’s Community & Technical College System (LCTCS), the state legislature via ACT 360, the Nunez Foundation and the Meraux Foundation of St. Bernard Parish. ACT 360 funded new campus facilities statewide for community and technical colleges while the Meraux Foundation donated the land adjacent to Nunez’s Administration Building where the STCCC now stands.

“This building is a community effort and a community asset,” said Nunez Chancellor Tina Tinney, Ed. D. “Our sincere thanks go out to the Meraux Foundation for donating the land, Holly & Smith Architects for designing something truly unique, to LCTCS for working with the state of Louisiana to make today possible, and to the Nunez Foundation for helping us cross the finish line.”

“The Nunez Student Testing and Career Counseling Center is an incredible new asset for our college and community,” said Clifford Englande, Board Chair for the Nunez Foundation.

Dr. Monty Sullivan, LCTCS President, was on hand to celebrate the opening of the STCCC. During his remarks Dr. Sullivan took the opportunity to congratulate Nunez for exceeding its graduation goals for the 2023-2024 academic year by 225 percent.

“That’s more EMT’s. That’s more folks in the culinary space. That’s more nurses, PTEC operators, Industrial Maintenance technicians,” said Dr. Sullivan. “They’re people that are making a living right here in this community. That’s what this facility means. It shows our students that they are first class.”

Also making remarks prior to the ribbon cutting were Rita Gue, President of the Meraux Foundation Board, and Matt Woodward, who offered a closing blessing.

Woodward was also on hand for a second ribbon cutting, officially opening the Coffee House Nunez location in the STCCC. The Coffee House Nunez joins the Coffee House’s original Arabi location in St. Bernard Parish, and will serve the Chalmette area via walk-in service and a drive-through that is accessible from Paris Road.

Joining Chancellor Tinney, Dr. Sullivan, Gue and Woodward for the ribbon cutting were LCTCS First Vice Chair Stephen Smith, members of the Nunez Foundation Board including Board Chair Clifford Englande, local officials including St. Bernard Parish President Louis Pomes, several members of the St. Bernard Parish Council, St. Bernard Schools Superintendent Doris Voitier, members of the Meraux Foundation Board, representatives from Holly & Smith Architects, representatives from the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce, representatives from St. Bernard Parish Economic Development, and others.

Registration is currently open for the Fall 2024 semester at Nunez.edu.
