History Lecture Series Returns to Nunez to Set the Stage for Fiesta Filipina

History Lecture Series 'Filipino Heritage in St. Bernard Parish' Sept. 25 at Nunez

Hon. Robert Romero, General Consul of the Republic of the Philippines, left, shares the Nunez Auditorium stage with Parish Historian Bill Hyland during a History Lecture Series presentation in October 2022 focusing on Filipino heritage in St. Bernard Parish. Romero will return to Nunez Sept. 25 with an updated presentation ahead of the Fiesta Filipina, scheduled for Oct. 12 at the Los Isleños Museum Complex in St. Bernard.

Nunez Community College’s History Lecture Series will host its first presentation of the fall semester Sept. 25 with Filipino Heritage in St. Bernard Parish.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Nunez Auditorium for guests to join our wine and cheese reception. The main program will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This week’s presentation will be hosted by Hon. Robert Romero, Consul General of the Republic of the Philippines, and special guest Mia Levert of the Philippine Louisiana Historical Society.

October is Filipino American History Month, including Fiesta Filipina on Oct. 12 at the Los Isleños Museum Complex in St. Bernard. In order to set the stage for Fiesta Filipina, Romero and Levert will offer a quick look at the rich history of St. Bernard’s Filipino population.

“Because St. Malo in St. Bernard Parish was the first permanent settlement of Filipinos in the US, it is proper and fitting that we set the tone for Fiesta Filipina,” said Romero. “We’ll cover culture, history, food, and public engagement in the community. All things that we will celebrate at Fiesta Filipina.”
