The Workforce Division at Nunez Community College in Chalmette will offer its three-semester Machinist course starting this June.

Classes will begin the first week of June. Registration is open now at Nunez.edu/Workforce.

Classes will meet Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Aerospace Building on the Nunez campus.

The Machinist program costs $2,000 per semester. Scholarships are available for the first semester through the Gene Haas Foundation.

This course is offered in partnership with the 1881 Institute, a nonprofit organization providing workforce training and technical education to expand access to careers in engineering and technology.

Students will receive hands-on training in CAD, CAM, and CNC operations that goes beyond conventional training standards, ensuring students develop the technical expertise and adaptability needed to thrive in an industry driven by innovation and automation.

Students who complete the program will earn NIMS (National Institute in Metalworking Skills) certifications at the end of each semester, including the Advanced Machining certification.

Instructor Bahiy Watson says jobs prospects exist for machinists right now across multiple industries.

“As industries navigate economic shifts, companies like Boeing and Chevron are streamlining operations, but continue seeking professionals in advanced production technologies, intelligent systems integration, and high-precision fabrication. We’re preparing students for this shift, equipping them with the skills to design, manufacture, and automate parts and processes in a rapidly evolving market,” said Watson.
